Lewis Remains Atop The Leaderboard After Moving Day Surge. Henderson struggles to keep pace in bid for three-peat.
PORTLAND, OR – Playing with purpose, Stacy Lewis went low Saturday as she continued her mission to support Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The Houston resident who’s committed her tournament earnings to help her city, got off to a hot start and never looked back.
Lewis birdied holes two and three before stringing together three consecutive birdies on holes six, seven, and eight. A 31 on the front nine set the pace and helped Lewis to a seven under, 65.
Lewis wasn’t the only player to push deep into the red on moving day. Seven players shot six under par or better for the day, with Mexico’s Gaby Lopez owning the low round with an eight under par, 64.
“I’ve been motivated for one, but I’ve just been extremely calm,” said Lewis. “Anybody who has seen me play knows that’s not normally me. There has just been a calmness about me this week. I haven’t worried about anything and just played really solid.”
If Lewis can hold on Sunday, she stands to take home $195,000 to support those impacted by catastrophic flooding in Houston last week.
Lewis will begin Sunday with a four-shot lead over Moriya Jutanugarn who had an impressive round of her own. Jutanugarn kept pace with Lewis early, matching her 31 on the outward nine. But, the momentum slowed on the backside as birdies gave way to pars and a bogey on the sixteenth. Jutanugarn finished the day with a six under par, 66.
“Well, I was feeling great. You know, I have been hitting solid and put myself in a lot of really good chance for birdie. Make some, miss some, but it’s still pretty solid round,” said Jutanugarn
Two-time defending champion Brooke Henderson struggled to keep pace as she missed fairway after fairway. The 19-year old Canadian superstar was last in the field in fairways hit, with only five tee shots avoiding the rough all day. Henderson finished at eight under par for the tournament and with the odds of a three-peat stacked against her.
Lewis and Jutanugarn will be joined by In Gee Chun in Sunday’s final group.
